Ah the combat tree, how I love you. From my days as a silly dagger rogue (I still love backstab and would love to see Combat Daggers be viable…a man can dream can’t he?) to the current days in the icy north I’ve been spec’d some variety of combat. While Mutilates may be the cool new guy on the block with his slick hair cut, fancy shoes and brooding attitude that makes all the ladies swoon, I am -for the time being- going to dance with who brought me and that’s the rush of Combat.

The Specs

Here are the current combat specs laid out by elitist jerks.

I’ve been seeing a lot of rogues using the 7/51/13 builds but personally I prefer the 15/51/5. I find that ruthlessness and lethality are just too good to pass up. Experiment and find out which one rubs you the right way.

At this point I’d like to mention that do to the changes to windfury and the current itemization of swords (the best mainhand available currently drops off of Naxx-25 trash), the sword/sword build is currently one of the weakest available. Currently the strongest weapon setup available is to main hand: Calamity’s Grasp and offhand: Webbed Death. Of course, this is simply based off current itemization and could will change when new items are introduced, for now, my best advice is to spec for the best weapons you currently have.

The Rotation

First off, pop tricks of the trade a few seconds before the pull. This will allow you to immediately begin burst damage on the boss.

If you happen to be in stealth lead off with Garrote. Personally, I rarely find myself starting a boss fight in stealth. The time lost moving to the boss just doesn’t seem worth it in my opinion.

Once you’ve begun attacking the boss, cast Bladeflurry (skip this step if there are other targets around that you shouldn’t be hitting) and then Adrenaline Rush. The ordering here is important, if you start with AR you’re wasting the 1.0 seconds from the GCD (global cooldown). Let me try to explain that a little better. Bladeflurry costs energy, AR does not. If you lead with AR you will be at full energy for the 1.0 seconds before you can do anything else, wasting the increased regeneration from AR for that time.

Next, Sinister Strike and then Slice and Dice.

Now, Sinister Strike up to 5 combo points.

Does Slice and Dice have >12 seconds left? If so, Rupture, otherwise Slice and Dice.

Sinister Strike up to 5 combo points.

Does Slice and Dice have >12 seconds left? Eviscerate or Envenom.

Repeat until the boss is dead.

Kick the boss for good measure.

Basically, just like in BC you need to make sure that Slice and Dice never drops. Your next priority is Rupture and after that you can sneak in an Eviscerate or an Envenom.

A good rule of thumb is to always Sinister Strike up to 5 combo points. If Slice and Dice has <12 seconds remaining, renew it. If Slice and Dice has >12 seconds and Rupture is not up (or only have 1 or 2 seconds remaining), reapply Rupture. If you’re set with both Slice and Dice and Rupture use the big E of your choice.

Hot Tip: If you find yourself very low on energy due to some bad luck with Combat Potency, try using Killing Spree for some extra DPS while you regen.

So, is anyone still Combat out there?

  1. hi just wondering what poisons u guys use for 15/51/5 dagger spec ty

  2. I use Instant Poison (insert level here) on my main hand and Deadly Poison (insert level here) on my offhand. But I’ve also heard of some people using Wound instead of Instant.

  3. Dagger?? Combat DAGGER??? thats pretty fail m8

  4. Wound on main hand and deadly on offhand. Thats what I use on my 15/51/5 fist-dagger spec.

  5. I always use Deadly poison, and I am a combat rogue.
Im using fistweapons so always opening with garotte, or cheapshot in pvp.
Just keep the target stunned and whenever u got DoT’s use cloak of shadow before vanishing. Wait for your cooldowns and do the same thing.
Whenever he tries to heal, you can just do the same and lock him again.
Killingspree has a great damage output with slow and high dps weapons ^^

  12. @Vancleef
What else are you going to put it in? You need it in the combat specc to get the set amount of points in for Killing Spree.

  13. can someone send me like a pic or somethin of a good talent tree for combat rogue lvl 80 fanx

  14. hey im a very geared combat rogue but im having trouble with my dps i can only hit 5k on bosses and trash about 4-4.5k dps do u guys have any tips on how i can get my dps up

  15. http://www.wowarmory.com/talent-calc.xml?cid=4&tal=00502000000000000000000000002520510500350102231005012515020030030000000000000000000
thats my build i use a fist weapon for main hand and dagger for off hand

  16. I’m using Wound on the main an Deadly on the OH. Maybe I screwed up my spec though because I took Deflection and then Riposte. Were these talents a waste?

  17. yes im combat and favor the sword/sword, using the 15/51/5 spec above. It was awfully close to what i specced myself ^^
I’m pretty satisfied, not because it gives the best dps but because it fits my style.
Thanks for clearing up on rotations, the page I wisited yesterday was pretty confusing about that part.

  18. I am dual spec, with them both being combat (these specs are for raiding) 20/51/0. Only difference is I have one for mobility and one for stationary fights. I use sword/axe with IP on MH and DP on OH. Socketed with pretty much all arpmen gems I stay around 5kdps unbuffed. Untill I get armpen caped (witch I belive is around 1k-1.2k) I will stay with mostly armpen gems. I like the rotation that is given with the BF then AR, SS, and SnD. The use of the KS when ur low on energy works verywell. The only thing im not sure about is why use rupture instead of doing Eviscerate when ur SnD is up and with 5cp. I know it can crit now but It dosen’t seem to be better dps. I guess I will have to w8 and see when Im armpen capped.

  19. If my MH is 2.6 do want a 1.5 OH or would a 2.6 OH be good?

  20. This post is a bit dated now seeing as the dominant pve combat build these days is 20/51/0. But thanks for the info either way, the rotation is still valid if you choose a rupture based combat build. I found a great post on a ruptureless 20/51/0 build here:
    http://www.wowcontender.com/blog/pve/combat-rogue-pve-build-and-rotation-patch-3-3-3/

Helped me raise my dps from 7.5K to over 9.5K in ICC.

  21. I always begin with Tricks and then i start with 2-3 CP then SnD.After that 5 CP then Eviscerate then again the same rotation.I keep always up SnD and i use Blade Flurry then Killing Spree. After those two i use Adrenaline Rush and trinket(if u still have it).My talents are 20/51/0.With that rotation i always have on static fights in ICC over 12k dps.And my glyphs are SS,Evisc and KS
