So 3.1 went live yesterday and despite the fact that it took a little too long for the servers to come up, I think it was a big success.

Yesterday I received a lot of emails and comments with questions about the specs and glyphs for Rogues in 3.1 so I decided to wrap them up in a nice big post for you. Aren’t I swell?

Spec

Well, yesterday I went over the specs for both Combat and Mutilate. Check that post out for more info.

A commenter on that post brought up the question of specing into Vile Poisons for Combat. Here is the build he is referring to: 18/51/2. First things first, this build is viable but I don’t like it. The first reason being that while it is very close to other combat builds right now, it is not believed to scale as well as the other builds, and will most likely be outpaced. Secondly, and far more importantly, I hate giving up points in Relentless Strikes. RS, to me, is a staple talent because of the amount of cycle-stability that extra energy provides you.

It was brought to my attention that I neglected HAT. I won’t lie to you, I’m not a HAT expert.  It just doesn’t interest me that much to try out, however, I am aware that there are rogues out there that enjoy it and that it can be competitive. So, with that in mind, I present my attempt at a HAT spec(3/24/44) and a link to the EJ forum thread which discusses HAT in far more detail than I ever could. Side Note: Looking over that build a few times I can’t help but think that I’m really onto something, but someone with more experience should be able to tell me I’m crazy though.

Glyphs

This was another popular question yesterday (what with the new patch bringing some actual choice into the matter).

Glyphs – Combat:

Sinister Strike
Rupture
Slice and Dice OR Adrenaline Rush OR Tricks of the Trade

The glyph of Sinister Strike is still an absolute must. No ifs, ands, or buts there.

As well, I still strongly believe that the Glyph of Rupture is a great addition and highly recommend that you keep using it.

The third slot is where things get a bit tricky and you really start to find some differing opinions.

The pre-3.1 staple, Glyph of Slice and Dice is still a solid choice (and my current) but as gear levels increase it seems that it is becoming easier and easier to maintain a solid rotation without it.

Glyph of Killing Spree has a following due to the very decent buff KS got this patch. I, however, find that KS is still too dangerous to use in some situations and thus not worth Glyphing.

Glyph of Fan of Knives has been talked about since it was such a huge chunk of our trash damage previously but let me tell you, after only one night in Ulduar, the game has changed. Pass on this.

Glyph of Adrenaline Rush(Note: the wowhead tooltip is currently wrong, this glyph does not decrease the cooldown but rather increases the duration by 5 seconds) seems like a pretty solid deal now that AR is only on a 3 minute cooldown and may get used more than once a fight, in fact, if(when?) I drop my glyph of SnD, AR will be my choice.

Now, Glyph of Tricks of the Trade is definitely being talked about.  It’s  particularly of use when rogues use Tricks on each other. This is a solid strategy (and one I employ) but I’m not completely sold on the glyph at the moment. I wouldn’t fault anyone for using it, but just make sure the other rogue is returning the favor by also glyphing for it.

Glyphs – Mutilate

Glyph of Mutilate
Glyph of Hunger For Blood
Glyph of Rupture OR Tricks of the Trade

Mutilate and Hunger For Blood are the obvious choices. The third slot could have a little leeway, either picking up Rupture, Slice and Dice or Fan of Knives but, as I stated earlier, I don’t really care for the Fan of Knives glyph and you really shouldn’t have a problem keeping Slice and Dice up as Mutilate so, in my opinion, Rupture is another obvious choice. As discussed above, Tricks is also a solid choice.

Glyphs – HAT

See, I didn’t forget you guys this time! While, again, I’m not a HAT expert there really aren’t a lot of glyphs out there for you, so your choices are pretty simple.

Glyph of Eviscerate
Glyph of Tricks of the Trade
Slice and Dice

*Deep Breath* Yes indeed, it would seem that the times they are a changing and the new world can be big and scary. But don’t be scared, you have the loving, caring (and handsome) Zaltu here at your side. Questions? Concerns? Love notes? Leave a comment or drop me a line.

P.S. Check out the Argent Tournament, it’s fun.

  1. I am wondering Y you strayed away from Imp Sinster when that is a rogue’s main attack. I am only commenting on the HAT build. I have been seeing a lot of ppl do this when they are doing builds.

  2. Hey man, I just wanted to say how much I LOVE reading your blog. Its such a great place for valuable rogue info with great logic backing your choices.

Now I may be biased since I too am a combat rogue lover (Nothing against you Mut or HaT brothers out there), but I completely agree with your spec and glyph choices.

I too went with the vile poisons combat build at the cost of RS. But after reading your blog, a few weeks back I changed and went into 5/5 RS instead. I gotta agree I find it much more useful and keeps the rotation much smoother.

Great choice on the glyphs as well. I love the idea of KS glyph since the buff, but I find some boss fights that just dont allow me to use it for whatever reason deter it as a viable choice. Good recommendation with the glyph or AR, will surely be checking that one out.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to reading future posts!

  3. @Chisrco Thanks for the love! Glad to see I’m helping :)

@Slyther I avoid Imp SS in the HAT build because it is my understanding that you will not be doing much sinister striking as HAT. Your party members should be generating you enough combo points to keep Slice and Dice up and just spam Eviscerate otherwise

  4. hey, what glyphs would you use for Mut/Prep PVP build?

  5. Out of interest what rotation are you pulling in 3.1 ?

Has you changed your own much from xs/5r/xe rotations of 3.0? I’ve missed a lot of the chatter on this.

  6. @Heimrlnk Mutilate/Vigor/Prep

@Newbierogue Haven’t had a ton of time to play with rotations but the standard 3s/5r/5e rotation seems to still be the way to go.

  7. Hey Zaltu! You are the SOURCE i come to to sort out all the miscellaneous filter! love your forum! Question, glyph of Envenom for a Mutilate rogue// doable? ITs a major so i suppose it would be Glyphs of Rupture, Mutilate and Envenom. Look forward to hearing your opinon!

  8. @Rydia The Glyph of Envenom was removed from the game. It can be a bit confusing because (for some reason) the glyph itself still exists and can be learned, however, the glyph will not do anything. Good riddance I say, that glyph was way OP :P

  9. lol no wonder i cant find it lol.. oo speaking of your post does the Master Poisoner skill work similarly to combat’s Savage Combat? is that a raidwide buff the tooltip is unspecific only stating what targets you poison and i was curious about its possibilities ^_^

  10. @Rydia Yes, the Master Poisoner skill is a raid wide buff. That talent was often skipped pre 3.1 because that buff is brought by other classes (Ret Paladins and Elemental Shaman), however, the new addition (the buff to deadly poison proc after an envenom) makes it a stronger choice than Turn The Tables.

  11. this may have already been asked, i didn’t read the other comments, but what should i chose in terms of glyphs for my offspec pvp mutilate/prep? since the spec you posted doesn’t have hunger for blood, what would be the one to get in its place?

  12. never mind, you already answered it..my bad

  13. Hmm, can you post up some rotations for the new 3.1 specs?

  14. I know most who dual spec are probably PVP and PVE spec’d. But what if I wanted two PVE specs. I know you say drop FoK glyph, but mixed with a couple of energy generating talents glyphs etc. There may be an interesting Trash mob spec/Razor (as seen so far)

What would you think would be the best talents tree and glyphs for this type of spec?

  15. Dude, great blog, just found it today. I bookmarked you for future stuff. Thanks for the info and keep up the good work.

  16. 7/51/13 what do you think
